Horoscope Sign Gifts on a Celtic theme - Celtic Trees

Having previously spent many years designing garments inspired by ‘The Book of Kells’, I recently had the idea of returning to designing, albeit in digital format.

I was fascinated by the Celtic Zodiac and hence the idea of creating the following Celtic Tree Zodiac Sign gifts became a reality.

The Celtic symbols section of my business is an ongoing ‘work in progress’ due to the fact that there are many ways to be creative with the Celtic theme.

(Note:  ‘The Book of Kells‘ is one of the oldest illustrated manuscripts in the world and dates back to 800AD.)

CELTIC TREES – Read Your Celtic Zodiac Sign Here

The Celtic zodiac is completely different from the Western zodiac signs which many of us are familiar with.

It is founded on the trees which the Druids believed to be sacred and said to have been created around 1100 BC.

Following are the list of the trees in the Celtic Tree Zodiac and their corresponding dates.

Please bear in mind that, unlike the modern Western horoscope of say, Leo, Virgo, Libra, etc., the Celtic zodiac has 13 symbols representing the lunar system, which revolves around the thirteen phases of the moon.

CELTIC ASTRONOMY HISTORY

The following is an extract from –

‘The Sacred World of the Celts’ by Nigel Pennick

(I highly recommend that you get a copy of this book – just click the link above to view the table of contents.)

“In ancient days, the early beliefs of the Celts were taken over and reformed by the Druids.

The Druids were the Celtic priests and judges.

Although they used Greek writing for their everyday business records and accounts, the spiritual part of the Druidic learning was oral and students had to memorize tens of thousands of verses, a process that could take up to twenty years.

According to contemporary accounts, Druidic teachings concerned the nature of the totality of existence, including cosmology, astronomy, physics, and theology.

The Druids supervised public and private sacrifices and gave judgments on religious questions.

They were held in great respect as judges and dispensers of justice, both at the personal and inter-tribal level.  Sometimes, they were called upon to arbitrate in time of war and made the opponents stop when they were about to form up their battle lines.  They judged all criminal cases, including murder and interpersonal disputes over boundaries of land or inheritance.  They passed sentence and awarded damages.  If anyone refused to accept the Druids’ judgment, they were immediately excommunicated, being excluded from attending public sacrifices.”

The following 12 points were taken from the Wikipedia site.  Links related are below the text …

  1. The Celtic culture was claimed to be highly advanced in astronomy; even famous Romans such as Caesar and Pliny (1) paid tribute to this.
  2. Celtics made many very advanced discoveries in their time period.
  3. Martial (c. AD 40-103) was a Celtic man who was one of the first to claim that the Earth was round and not flat. (2)
  4. The Celts also were aware of many constellations and planets and had their own jargon for them; for example, the constellation Leo was known as An Corran and the planet Mars was called An Cosnaighe.
  5. These terms were backed by the necessary mathematical and technical jargon and still survive in Irish linguistics today while the English equivalents are loan-words from Greek, Latin, and Arabic.
  6. During the 12th to 17th century, many works on Arabic astronomy and astrology were being translated to Irish, which influenced Irish astrological practices.
  7. Eventually, these translations turned into simple Irish-ising of the Arabic words, which created the more modern forms of the Irish astronomical terms.
  8. In the Brehon Laws (*3) it is stated that astronomers and astrologists had to be qualified. The degree was called foirceadlaidhe, which was a degree of the fifth order of wisdom and proved one’s knowledge of the topic.
  9. The famous first Century BC Coligny Calendar, a highly sophisticated lunar and solar calculator first constructed in 1100 BC, was created by Celtic astronomers and was once thought to be the most extensive document in the Celtic language.
  10. There are various astronomical cycles which were well understood and often applied to calculations in connection with chronology and the calendar.
  11. Concepts of this calendar and many other aspects of Celtic astronomy have parallels to Vedic cosmology. Through this, it was discovered that ancient Celtic astrologers used similar systems as those of Vedic Astrologers.
  12. It has been hypothesized that the astronomical knowledge of the Celts was somewhat inherited from more ancient cultures which built various megalithic monuments.

Celtic societies were based upon the equality and balance between the male and the female…the female Druidesses being symbolized by the Spirits who lived in the sacred trees. Each Celtic Zodiac Sign corresponds to a given tree and a letter of the Ogham alphabet.

The Celts were one of the great founding civilizations of Europe; the first northern European civilization to emerge into recorded history.

  • Biographical note: Peter Berresford Ellis BA (Hons) MA. NN. FRES is, according to the Times Higher Education Supplement ‘the preeminent Celtic scholar now writing’. He is the author of thirty books on various aspects of Celtic culture and history. The recipient of many honours for his work, he has lectured on both sides of the Atlantic and is and has held prominent positions in many Celtic educational bodies.
